Envirothon 2014

The Envirothon is a competition for high school students to test their knowledge of natural resources and presentation skills.   Many local partners work to deliver a preparation workshop and regional competition (CA staff, County of Huron staff, Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation staff, and volunteers).  This year, the HSC ran the presentation portion of the regional competition at Pinery Provincial Park.   Out of the seven teams that competed, the winning team for 2014 was from Goderich District Collegiate Institute (above picture)!…

Huron-Perth Agriculture and Water Festival 2014

It was another successful year for the Huron-Perth Agriculture and Water Festival!  This is a fun and educational event that provides grade four students hands on learning opportunities about agriculture and water; their importance in our local environment and role in our everyday lives.  Participating students spend a half day in each of the water and agriculturally focused activities.  We are hopeful students who participate will become better stewards of our water resources and more aware of the agricultural community…

Fall 2013 tree planting

Thanks to all who joined us for fall 2013 tree planting! The forecast was touch-and-go for our volunteer tree planting event the first weekend in October, so we decided to split the tree planting into two days. On October 5th, the Huron Stewardship Council partnered with the Canadian Tree Fund to help continue the restoration of woodlands destroyed by the 2011 tornado.  First off, local volunteers met with folks from out of town in a woodlot near Benmiller where 780…

May 2013 tree planting

May 2013: Thank you to everyone who made our spring tree planting day a great success! With the help of about 25 hard-working volunteers, 1300 trees were planted in a tornado-damaged woodlot at Benmiller to complement the large trees that were planted there last fall.
